Albanian is ninety-seventh in the ranking of the languages most spoken in the world.
It is spoken by about 6 million people, of whom 3,6 million in Albania. A good number of speakers can also be found in various areas of the Balkans like Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.
This language is spoken as well in numerous communities of mother tongue people in Turkey, Greece and in Italy, in particular on the Apulian coasts and in Sicily but also in other areas because of recent emigrations.
The phenomenon, besides these countries, has concerned also other economically prosperous countries in Western Europe, North America and somewhat in Oceania. Quite reliable estimates state that there are about 3 million Albanians concentrated in these three continents. Finally, small Albanophone communities are to be found in Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine.

Albanian is subdivided in various dialects combined in two main dialectal groups: the Gheg and the Tosk, which are not perfectly intelligible between them.
Their reciprocal comprehension depends most of all on the speakers' level of culture and on their knowledge of standard Albanian. The Gheg is spoken in the north of the country while the Tosk in the south.
Albanian deriving from a revised form of the Tosk is the official language of Albania. Furthermore, it is an official language in Kosovo, in the Macedonian Republic and in Montenegro.
