According to recent estimates, Arabic is fifth in the ranking of the languages most spoken in the world. As a matter of fact, it can count on about 206 million native speakers and another 250 million that speak Arabic as a second language.
The official Arabic, the language taught in school, used by the media, and that you can find in the books like the Koran, is the so called standard Arabic. On the contrary, the colloquial Arabic assumes a large variety of forms depending on the place where it is spoken. These dialects are so different from each other that they are most often incomprehensible.
Some affirm that the differences between the various Arabic dialects are similar to those found in the Romance languages. In our opinion this affirmation might be somewhat exagerated.

Arabic is the official language in all the countries of the northern belt of Africa and of almost all the countries of the Middle East with the exception of Israel and Iran, where, in any case, it is widely diffused. Moreover, it is spoken in large areas of Central Africa, Turkey and many other countries which give shelter to Muslims, who, basically for religious reasons (the Koran actually is written in Arabic) have good knowledge of this language. From 1974 Arabic is one of the official languages of the UN.
