The Danish language is spoken by about 5 and a half million people. In the ranking of the languages most spoken in the world, Danish is at the hundred and second position.
Since there is not a law which sanctions it as official, Danish is only de facto the official language of Denmark.
Besides this country, Danish is also spoken in Greenland and in Fær Øer islands (where it is official as well as the Faroese and the language Inukitut). As an ex-colonial language, it is still in use in Iceland. It is a minor language, protected by the regional constitution and spoken by about 50.000 people in Schleswig-Holstein, a German region. Moreover, there are small communities of Danish speakers in Argentina, United States and Canada. On the Bornholm island a particular variant of Danish is spoken, Bornholmsk.

The nearest languages to Danish are Norwegian and Swedish. In particular, the written forms of Danish and Norwegian Bokmål are very similar.
The speakers of all these languages in general can understand each other, even though Norwegians usually understand Danish and Swedish people better than Danish and Swedish people do with each other.
The language taught at school is the official Danish, called Rigsdansk ("Danish of the kingdom"), a neutral form spoken in the capital and in other big cities too.
Denmark is formed by about 400 islands where innumerable local dialects persist. The dialects spoken in the rural areas are fairly incomprehensible for the citizens that speak Rigsdansk, even if the new generations speak adapted dialects which are understood more or less in all the country.
