The word "Dutch" in English usually indicates the language spoken in the Netherlands. Actually this denomination is not completely correct.
As a matter of fact, for the modern linguists Dutch is simply the dialect of only two provinces of the Netherlands: Northern Holland and Southern Holland. The correct wording of the language spoken in the Netherlands is Netherlandish, even though this term is very seldom used. Anyway, the word "Dutch" is universally accepted.
Dutch is the forty-sixth most spoken language in the world. There are about 22 million people speaking Dutch as a first language and those who speak it as a second language are more than 5 million. This count does not include 6,2 million people speaking Afrikaans, a language which derives from the Dutch of the eighteenth century and that, despite having a pretty low level of comprehension with the modern Dutch, it has various similarities with it. It is still spoken in South Africa by the Afrikaners (descendants of the non British white colonists) and in Namibia by a good part of the population, although it is not the official language of this country.

Dutch is instead one of the official languages in the Netherlands (with Frisian) and in Belgium (with French and German). In Belgium it is generally called Flemish and it is official in the Flanders and in the region of Brussells, which in any case is bilingual and with a majority of French speakers.
Moreover, Dutch is the official language in Suriname and in other Dutch former colonies such as the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Although it is not official, it is spoken by some minorities in the north of France, in the lower region of the Rhine in Germany and also by large communities of emigrants abroad especially in the United States and Canada.
Regarding the dialects, numerous local variants of Dutch exist both in the Netherlands and in Belgium. In some cases the differences are pretty evident but not so much as to compromise their mutual comprehension.
