Hindi, together with English, is the official language of India. Besides these two in the region there are another 21 languages which have a co-official character.
Besides India, Hindi is an official language in Nepal and in the Fiji islands. Moreover, because of immigration, Hindi is spoken in many other countries such as South Africa, Mauritius, United Kingdom, United States, Yemen and Uganda.
Hindi is strictly related to Urdu (the official language in Pakistan). As a matter of fact, before the separation between India and Pakistan occurred in 1947, Hindi and Urdu were in practice a single language. Their similarity reveals itself especially in the oral communication. In fact a discussion between two people, the first speaking Hindi and the second speaking Urdu, is absolutely possible.

The differences between these languages are substantially three. The first one pertains to the nearness of Hindi to Sanskrit that is the original language. The second one pertains to the writing system, that, in the case of Hindi, is the Devanagari alphabet (written from left to right), while Urdu uses a form of the Arabic alphabet in its Persian variant (written from right to left). Finally, while Hindi is spoken by the population that professes the Hindu religion, Urdu is the language of the Muslims that live in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Estimates about the number of people speaking Hindi as a main language vary from 340 to 500 million, depending on including the dialects strictly linked to it or not. To these amounts we have to add 60 million people speaking Urdu and other 800 million that speak Hindi as a second language or that can understand it anyway.
According to these estimates, Hindi (even not considering Urdu) is consequently the most spoken language in the world after Chinese.
