Hungarian (or Magyar) is the sixty-first most spoken language in the world.
The number of native speakers is about 14 million, the most part of whom (10,5 million) are in Hungary where Hungarian is the official language.
A good portion of mother tongue speakers (1,5 million) live in Romania and a million in the remaining neighbouring countries (Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine in particular) where Hungarian is co-official in many areas.
This dispersion is a consequence of the First World War. All these territories belonged in fact to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and after the conflict some of them had been given to the winning countries as compensation for the war losses but with the condition of maintaining the original language.

To the speakers living in the bordering countries, we should then add all the emigrants abroad, more than a million people widespread in the various continents, mainly in the United States, in Canada and in Israel.
The Hungarian dialects are usually subdivided in geographical areas. For this reason they take the following names: "western", "northern", "southern" and "eastern". Beside these, there are some other minor dialects but, as a general rule, all the dialects of Hungarian are mutually comprehensible.
