With about 77 million native speakers, Korean is the thirteenth most spoken language in the world.
It is the official language of South Korea and North Korea, countries where it is used by practically the whole population.
Korean has various dialects. There is a strong connection between them and the regions where they are spoken because the borders of these are marked out very sharply by seas and mountains.
Korean spoken in South Korea is based on the dialect of the area around Seoul, while the one spoken in North Korea is based on the dialect of Pyongyang. The differences between them don't block communication, as they are more or less similar to those existing between Castilian and Spanish spoken in South America.

In general all the dialects of Korean are pretty similar and mutually comprehensible, maybe with the exception of the dialect of Jeju. In fact some Korean linguists classify the dialect spoken in this island as a language apart.
Besides South Korea and North Korea, Korean has a status of official language in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture which belongs to China from a political point of view.
Moreover, Korean minorities are present more or less in all the continents, most of all in the former Soviet Republics of Central Asia, Japan, the United States, Canada and Australia.
