Polish is the twenty-fifth language most diffused in the world, being spoken by about 44 million people, most living in Poland (where Polish is the official language).
About 97% of Polish citizens speak Polish as a first language and this makes Poland one of the most homogeneous European countries from a linguistic point of view.
Besides Poland, this language is spoken by a good number of people in Belarus, Lithuania and Ukraine, countries which were annexed by the former Soviet Union after the Second World War. Moreover, there are communities of speakers spread all over the world especially in Western Europe, the United States and Canada.

Regarding the dialects of Polish, it is worth mentioning that the inhabitants of Poland speak standard Polish a bit differently depending on the region in which they live. Anyway, the differences are small and the various dialects are all reciprocally comprehensible.
To understand how slight these differences are, you need only to know that the non native speakers cannot distinguish easily the regional variants. Nothing comparable to what happens for example with the various dialects of Italian, which are considered real languages in their own.
