With about 210 million mother tongue speakers, Portuguese is the seventh most spoken language in the world, and, among the Neo-Latin languages is overcome only by Spanish. To this estimate we have to add about 20 million people that speak it as a second language.
Portuguese is the official language of eight countries. In Portugal it is spoken practically by the whole population and the same occurs in Brazil where, among other things, 90% of Portuguese native speakers in the world are concentrated.
Also in the small Cape Verde and in São Tomé and Príncipe it is a very common language, even though in the form of Creole variant. There are in fact about twenty Creole Portuguese languages scattered in all the continents.

In the other countries where Portuguese is official language, it is generally spoken as a second language and with percentages of use that vary from a country to another. In Angola and Mozambique it is pretty common, while in Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea a bit less.
Despite still being an official language in East Timor and in Macao, mother tongue speakers in these countries are a pretty low percentage of the population.
Finally, Portuguese is spoken in some areas of Portugal's Indian former colonies (such as Goa) and in many communities in various cities and regions of the world. Obviously there are some differences between the various forms of spoken Portuguese but, despite this, they are all mutually comprehensible.
