Romanian (or Rumenian), with about 30 million mother tongue speakers, is the thirty-eighth most spoken language in the world.
Of these 30 million, about 20 live in Romania, where Romanian is the official language and it is spoken by 90% of the population. Also in Moldavia Romanian is the official language, spoken by 3,8 million people corresponding to 70% of the population.
It is important to notice that, despite being practically identical to Romanian spoken in Romania, Romanian spoken in Moldavia is called Moldavian.

Romanian is also spoken in some areas of the countries bordering Romania, in particular in Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria and Serbia. In this country Romanian has moreover a co-official character in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.
Furthermore, because of emigration, there are millions of Romanians scattered in many countries. The largest communities are in Italy, Spain, Israel, Russia, Germany, United States and Canada.
Finally, Romanian can be divided into four dialects: Daco-Romanian (standard Romanian, the official language), Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian. Being all mutually comprehensible, sometimes the word "Romanian" is used to indicate them all as a whole without any distinctions.
