Russian is one of the six official languages of the UN. It is also the official language of Russia and one of the official languages of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Furthermore, it is co-official in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and in some Moldavian regions (like Gagauzia and Transnistria).
In the period of the Soviet Union, Russian was the official language of the state. As a matter of fact, even though each of the republics belonging to the superpower had its own official language, the greater prestige was reserved for Russian. After the disintegration occurred in 1991, the various newly independent republics began to promote their own native languages. Naturally, this provoked the gradual decrease of the importance of Russian.
Despite this, it is still much diffused in Ukraine, Esthonia, Latvia, it is spoken by important sectors of the population of the other former Soviet Republics and in Mongolia too. Besides, there are millions of emigrants widespread over all the continents that speak Russian as a second language.

With 165 million mother tongue speakers and another 110 million that speak it as a second language, Russian is the most spoken language of Slavic origin in the world and the eighth in absolute.
Despite the general levelling of the twentieth century, which has concerned the vocabulary in particular, various dialects of Russian still exist. Some linguists usually divide them in two main groups on a regional basis, the northern and the southern, with Moscow in the middle acting as a watershed. Other linguists instead divide the language in three groups, adding to the previously mentioned also the central dialects, with Moscow being part of them.
Obviously this is just a basic macro-classification that does not take into consideration either the presence of various dialects in each group or the presence of other minor dialects on the Russian territory.
