The Swedish language has the peculiarity of not being official in Sweden. It is spoken by about 8 million Swedish born people and one million immigrants that during the time have settled down in Sweden, but, despite this, a political act that recognizes Swedish as the official language has never been issued.
On Swedish soil the spoken and written language is absolutely uniform and standardized. Nevertheless, beside it there are still some rural dialects spoken by very small communities (so small that the linguists sometimes refer to them using the name "parish languages"). Some dialects differ remarkably from the standard Swedish and in some cases they are not mutually comprehensible.

As regards the comprehension between Nordic languages, Swedish and Norwegian are considered quite mutually comprehensible, less so Swedish and Danish.
Besides Sweden, Swedish is spoken also by about 6% of the Finnish population, in particular along the coasts and in the Åland islands. There are not many Swedish living abroad, but the largest communities are to be found in the United States and in Canada.
Swedish, with about 9 million mother tongue speakers, is the seventy-fourth most spoken language in the world.
