Turkish is the twenty-first most spoken language in the world. As a matter of fact, it is spoken by about 73 million native speakers: 64 million in Turkey (about 90% of the population) and 9 million living in other countries.
Besides being spoken in Turkey and in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (countries in which it is the official language), Turkish is used also in the territories that once belonged to the Ottoman Empire.
The largest Turkish community is in Germany and it counts on more than 2 million and a half people. Turkic people are then present practically in all the countries of the Balkan area, in the north of Iraq, Crimea, Podolia, Moldavia and in the south of Ukraine.
Moreover, there are large communities of Turkish speakers also in the Netherlands, France, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

During the centuries the language has experienced various changes in the writing system. From the thirteenth century to the twentieth century the Arabic characters were preferred. But in the first postwar period they introduced an orthographical reform which adopted the Latin alphabet. Parallely to this, they strongly stimulated neologisms and fought against the introduction of Arabic and Persian loanwords. These choices were due to the firm belief that the westernization of the country would have contributed to its modernization. Despite this nationalistic spirit, many dialects haven't disappeared, they still exist and are spoken by the population.
